Event:

Single-title publishers or publishers with two or more small- to medium-sized magazines have a tough job staying alive unless they are independently wealthy. After years of struggling, Up Here Publishing said “enough!” and ventured into several forms of contract publishing, from partnering with airlines, to sharing publication profits with trade associations.

This session will examine different types of contract publishing models alongside several success stories within the Canadian magazine industry.

MARION LAVIGNE is president of Up Here Publishing Ltd., based in Yellowknife, NT, and founding co-publisher of Up Here magazine. She continues to be involved with all of Up Here’s periodical publishing projects, including Up Here Business and contract publishing.

LaVigne is a Ryerson journalism grad who fled Toronto over 30 years ago for the wilds of Canada’s far north. She is a former faculty member of the Banff Magazine Publishing Workshops and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Western Magazine Awards Foundation in 2004.
