Latest Issue Contents January 2011 issue - Children of Palestine - an Okanagan connection.
It's a world away from the Okanagan Valley...kindergarten children pass through armed checkpoints to attend school, young teens detained for failing to carry ID cards. As part of the Christian Peacemakers
team, one Okanaganite knows he cannot change the severity of the occupation, let alone end it, but hopes his work contributes in some small way to the larger struggle. Another Okanagan resident has been helping the children of Palestine in the small village of Al Walajeh near the outskirts of Jerusalem. We'll bring you their thought provoking stories in the January issue.
Literacy - Has the English language gone the way of the Dodo bird?
CU L8R NGLSH. BKS R SO LST YR. LOL! Years ago, our teenagers spent hours yakking on the telephone. Now they're burning up the airwaves with the written word-or something loosely resembling words. Are shorthand and acronyms (often undecipherable to technophobes) cause for despair, or a normal mutation of the language? And what about those newfangled electronic readers? Does their increasing popularity really mean that soon, printed novels will be gone-so to speak-with the wind?
International Children's Games in Kelowna - Connecting Lives
From the first International Children's Games in June 1968 in Cejie, Slovenia, the ICG has served a single purpose: to promote peace and understanding between peoples. This International Olympic Committee (IOC) sanctioned event , in which youth ages 12-15 come from around the world to participate in a variety of sports, will be held in Kelowna, January 26 to 31, 2011. We chat with Heather Schneider, this year's chair, in our Regional Attitude section.
Advertising Information Beginning with our February 2011 issue, North of 50 will merge it's two editions into one. This gives the Thompson Nicola South Cariboo region the same eco friendly, full colour magazine format that the Okanagan Shuswap edition has enjoyed since April 2010.
